The Bunyip nugget: Found in 1972 at Bridgewater, Victoria, weighs 50 ounces.
The Mineral collection contains approximately 44 500 specimens representing over 2000 species. Approximately half the material is Australian and half foreign. The collection is fully registered and the data have been entered into a computer database. The collection is arranged systematically according to chemical groups and subdivided on the basis of location.
The collection contains 23 type specimens of Australian minerals.
Collection highlights include collections of gold from Victoria and Western Australia and a significant collection of minerals from Broken Hill, New South Wales.
Material is still being acquired through field collecting programs and by purchase and exchange.
